Lussi, Driscoll, Asom Earn Ivy Awards, Six Tigers Named All-Ivy
November 12, 2015 | Women's Soccer
In recognition of a season that saw the Tigers crack the NSCAA top 25, clinch the Ivy League title with a week to go, and return to the NCAA tournament for the first time in three years, Princeton's name is all over the Ivy League's awards and All-Ivy teams.
The Ivy office announced Thursday that the league's coaches voted junior forward Tyler Lussi a unanimous choice for Offensive Player of the Year, Sean Driscoll the Coach of the Year, and freshman forward Mimi Asom a unanimous choice for Rookie of the Year.
Lussi's Offensive POY award is her second consecutive. The award was inaugurated in 2013, splitting the Ivy Player of the Year honor into Offensive and Defensive awards, and Lussi is just the fourth player in Ivy history to win two Player of the Year honors. Yale's Jen Teti (1992, 1993), Harvard's Emily Stauffer (1995, 1996) and Princeton's Esmeralda Negron '05 (2003, 2004) are the others, and Lussi has the chance to become the league's first three-time winner next season.
Lussi led the Ivy League with 13 goals and 31 points, and she was tied for fifth in the Ivy with five assists. Her 13 goals give her 41 for her career, tying her with Linda DeBoer '86 for second on Princeton's all-time list and just six goals behind Negron for the record.
Asom is the fifth Tiger to earn the Ivy's Rookie of the Year honor, joining DeBoer, Emily Behncke '06, Diana Matheson '08 and Alison Nabatoff '13. Asom's 10 goals were third in the Ivy and tied for second-most in a season for a freshman all-time at Princeton. Only Lussi two years ago (10) and DeBoer (12, 1982) had more.
The Coach of the Year award is in just its second year, and Driscoll is the first Princeton coach to win it. The award comes in a season that saw Driscoll become just the second Princeton coach to record double-digit wins in his first year and just the third coach in Ivy history to win a league title in his or her first year. Driscoll set a personal best with the Tigers' 13 wins so far this season and will take part in the NCAA tournament for the first time Saturday as a player or coach.
Princeton's six All-Ivy honors are its most since picking up eight in 2012. Sophomore midfielder Vanessa Gregoire, who was an honorable mention last year, joined Lussi on the first team after leading the Ivy with eight assists while standing fourth on the team with four goals.
Asom was a second-team selection along with sophomore midfielder Natalie Larkin and senior defender Emily Sura. Larkin, who has five goals and three assists this season, was a second-team pick a year ago and the honor is the first for Sura, who has three goals and three assists this season.
Sophomore defender Mikaela Symanovich earned her first All-Ivy League honor as an honorable mention after tying for second on the team with six assists.
Driscoll and the Tigers' six player honorees will lead the team into Saturday's NCAA first-round game against Boston College at Roberts Stadium for a 7 p.m. start. Tickets can be purchased here or by calling 609-258-4TIX(4849).
