Holmes Helps U.S. Win Bronze in China, More Tigers Fence in K.C.

Princeton's Katharine Holmes competed with the U.S. team at the Women's Épée World Cup in Nanjing, China, over the weekend, helping the Americans finish third as a team.
Individually, Holmes took 14th as the top American, going 5-1 in pool play and winning her way into the Round of 16 before getting tripped up by China's Sheng Lin 14-13.
In the team competition, the U.S. defeated Hungary 45-30 in the Round of 16 and Italy 45-36 in the quarters before South Korea got past the U.S. 25-23. The U.S. then defeated China 36-32 in the third-place bout. Holmes, who is taking time off from Princeton to pursue a 2016 U.S. Olympic bid, teamed with Courtney Hurley, Kelley Hurley and Katarzyna Trzopek to win the bronze.

In Kansas City, some of Princeton's newer fencers competed at the November North American Cup event, which featured junior competitions as well as those for younger entrants.
On the men's side, freshman Wesley Johnson took seventh in the junior épée event while fellow rookie Michael Popovici took 45th in the field of 225.
On the women's side, Sophomore Taylor Chin took sixth among 196 competitors in the junior foil event, while rookie Charlene Liu took ninth of 141 in the junior épée competition.
