LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Annie Tarakchian poured in a game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting to lead the Princeton University women's basketball team to a comfortable 78-59 victory over Rider at Alumni Gymnasium.
Setting the tone early, the Tigers shot 52.9 percent (18-34) in the first half en route to a 43-27 lead at the intermission. Tarakchian got Princeton going, scoring 11 of the Tigers' first 15 points. Taylor Williams and Alex Wheatley followed with a pair of putbacks that closed out a 13-0 Princeton run over a span of 4:50.
With the Orange and Black on top 21-13 after the first 10 minutes, Tarakchian netted five-straight points to open the second quarter. Williams then converted a three-point play the old-fashioned way to push the Tigers' lead to 16. Ahead 36-20 with less than three minutes to go in the half, Tarakchian came through with a three-point play of her own to stake Princeton to its largest lead of the period.
The Tigers opened the third quarter on a 14-6 run over the first 4:32. Spinning away from a defender, Michelle Miller stuck a pull-up jumper from the free throw line before Wheatley ducked into the paint for two to make it 47-27. After a pair of Robin Perkins free throws, Miller drained a three-pointer to pad the Tiger lead.
Rattling home a triple from the left corner following a Manon Pellet layup, Amanda Berntsen fed Wheatley in the post for two more. Miller capped off the Tigers' big third quarter spurt with a pair of free throws at 5:28 to make it 57-33.
Falling just shy of her third double-double of the season, Tarakchian pulled down nine rebounds. Hitting six of her 10 shot attempts, Wheatley finished with 12 points while Miller chipped in with 10 points and four boards. Heading home to her native California for the next two games, Miller stands just 30 points shy of becoming the 23rd member of the Tigers' 1,000-point club.
Dominating Rider inside, Princeton finished with a 42-18 edge in points in the paint. The Tigers shot 45.7 percent (32-70) from the field while holding the Broncs to a 34.5 (20-58) shooting percentage. Also holding a 46-36 advantage on the glass, the Orange and Black committed a season-low four turnovers.
Heading west for the holiday, Princeton will open play at the Loyola Marymount Thanksgiving Classic against UC-Irvine on Friday, Nov. 27.
