ITHACA, N.Y. (11/6/15) - It looked as though there would be some overtime at Lynah Rink this evening, but Cornell's Jeff Kubiak prevented that from happening with a goal with 49 seconds left in regulation to give the Big Red a 4-3 game in the ECAC Hockey opener.
While the first period was scoreless, the goals came one-after-another in the second as Cornell took a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes. Princeton's Ben Foster tied the game just 1:03 into the third period.Sophomore David Hallisey had a big hand in the Tigers' first goal as he took the draw and then battled three Big Red players behind the goal. He was the victor coming out with possession and pushing the puck around to Véronneau at the bottom of the circle. Max Véronneau then beat Mitch Gillam with a five-hole shot for the game's first tally at 1:31 of the second.
Three minutes later it was a tie game, after Beau Starrett knocked in a bouncing Alec McCrea rebound. Anthony Angello followed up with two goals in 2:15 as Cornell grabbed a 3-1 lead at 8:43 of the second. His first was shot from the left point the second on a feed from Kubiak.
The Princeton freshmen took advantage of Cornell's poor passing and got the Tigers within one, 3-2. As McCrea gave chase to a puck to the pass that went down the opposite end, Véronneau was on his heels and forced him to play the puck without seeing the only player in sight was Ryan Kuffner. Kuffer got the pick at the top of the circle and backhanded a pass to Véronneau who cut across the crease and shot between the post and the glove of Gillam.
Foster tallied his second goal of the season with junior defender Tommy Davis assisting. David did a great job of preventing Cornell from getting the puck past him at the blue line. The first time he pushed the puck back down deep, the second time he decided to take it for himself. He skated into the center and backhanded the puck on goal where Gillam made the save but left it for Foster to take advantage of on the right side.
After Cornell took two penalties at 12:05 and 16:30, Princeton pushed to get the go-ahead goal, but that goal would come from the other end, and just 41 seconds after the teams returned to 5x5 action. Trevor Yates left the puck for Kubiak who sent in the puck top shelf over the shoulder of Colton Phinney. Phinney had another great game in goal, making 39 saves, nine of which came during the penalty kill.
The Tigers put the extra skater on with 37 seconds remaining but didn't have enough time to score the equalizer.
Princeton travels to Colgate for a 7 p.m., game tomorrow night with the Raiders.
