Women's Swimming Claims Relays, But Drops Close Meet To Miami In Opener
November 07, 2015 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Princeton swept both relays and won five events overall, including one by freshman Lindsey Swartz, but those would not be enough for an opening-day victory for the women's swimming & diving team. The Tigers pushed Miami to the end, but the Hurricanes claimed the meet 156-144.
The highlights for Princeton came at both the beginning and end, as the Tigers won both the 200 medley and 200 free relays. The medley win, by the team of Beverly Nguyen, Olivia Chan, Elizabeth McDonald, and Madelyn Veith, came in 1:46.27, while the 200 free relay win by McDonald, Claire McIlmail, Nikki Larson and Veith won in 1:34.84.
Besides being part of the final winning relay, Larson won both the 50 free and the 100 free. A Tiger tri-captain this season, Larson took the 50 in 23.88, while she won the 100 in 51.18. Veith (24.04) and McDonald (24.21) went 2-3 in the 50.
Swartz wasn't the only freshman with a strong debut, but she was the one to grab a victory. Swartz won the 200 breast in 2:19.95, almost two seconds faster than the rest of the field. The coaching staff was excited about the freshman breaststroke additions, and this event showed that the excitement had plenty of merit. Tiger freshmen went 1-3-4-5, with Janet Zhao, Kate Didion and Karen Zhang rounding out the field.
Freshman distance swimmer Monica McGrath had a pair of second-place finishes. She finished the 1000 in 10:17.92, and then swam the 500 in 5:00.66. Princeton also had runner-up finishes from Larson (200 free, 1:50.44), Swartz (100 breast, 1:06.38), freshman Isabel Reis (200 fly, 2:01.57), senior Morgan Karetnick (100 fly, 55.94), and Chan (200 IM, 2:06.43).
Freshman Carolyn MacFarlane was the top Tiger diver. She scored 245.48 points, while junior Lisa Li scored 236.18.
"This was an exciting end to a great training camp," head coach Susan Teeter said. "Racing at the end of camp was a great opportunity. We were excited to see people start to race in their events, and it was fun to see the freshmen get to race. There was great swimming and diving all week for us."
