Junior Brett Harner didn't need a scouting report on his Binghamton Open championship opponent. Cornell's Jake Taylor defeated Harner in sudden-victory overtime in the 2013 Pennsylvania state final. Harner made sure overtime wouldn't be an issue Sunday during Princeton's season opener; he topped Taylor 4-3 to win the 197-pound Binghamton title and close a strong first showing for the 2015-16 Tigers.
Harner was one of nine Tigers to place at a meet that went deep into Sunday night. Sophomore 174-pounder Jonathan Schleifer joined Harner in the finals, though he fell 7-2 to returning NCAA finalist Brian Realbuto of Cornell. Fellow NCAA qualifiers Jordan Laster (141) and Chris Perez (149) both reached the semifinals as well, while seniors Judd Ziegler (fifth, 165) and Scott Gibbons (fifth, 197), junior Ray O'Donnell (fourth, 285), sophomore Mike Markulec (fifth, 285) and freshman Pat D'Arcy also placed (third, 125).
"I was happy with the way we performed over a very long day," head coach Chris Ayres said. "I'm psyched for Brett to get that title, and we had a number of other guys do well. D'Arcy getting third, with his only loss to a returning All-American, was impressive. We have plenty of work to do, but this was a good foundation to build upon."
Harner, who defeated two All-Americans last February before suffering a practice injury that kept him out of the EIWA Championships, won five matches en route to the title, including a 15-5 major decision over Frank Mattiace of Penn in the semifinal. Schleifer picked up four wins, including two by fall, before a well-wrestled final against Realbuto.
Laster nearly gave Princeton three finalists, but he fell 3-1 in overtime in his semifinal match with Lehigh's Randy Cruz. Those two met in the 2015 EIWA final, which Cruz controlled through a 6-1 win. Laster kept Cruz from any takedowns through seven minutes, but he couldn't score one of his own, either. The Lehigh veteran ultimately got one in overtime for the win.
Two other Lehigh wrestlers, Laike Gardner and Darian Cruz, eliminated Princeton wrestlers one match short of the final. Gardner caught Perez for back points to carry him to a two-point win in the 149-pound semifinal, while 2014 All-American Cruz topped D'Arcy 5-1 at 125. Regardless, it was a terrific debut for D'Arcy, one of the standouts of Princeton's 15th-ranked recruiting class.
Markulec, who didn't wrestle a match last season, nearly made a stunning run to the final, but he fell 3-1 in overtime against Harvard, while Ziegler fell in his 165-pound semifinal. O'Donnell, who was on the other side of the bracket, made his way through to the consolation final to earn a fourth-place finish.
Gibbons dropped his championship draw opener, but won four matches in the consolation round before ultimately finishing fifth.
