PRINCETON, N.J. (12/12/15) - The Princeton men's hockey team lost a 4-1 game to the US Under-18 Team in an exhibition game this evening at Hobey Baker Rink.
USA took a 2-0 lead, scoring both goals in the first two minutes of the second period. The teams traded goals in the third period before an empty-net goal in the final minute.
The first goal came 24 seconds into the second period, a power-play goal. A miffed shot sent the puck skirting behind the goal where it was picked up by Joey Anderson (Duluth). He pushed it out to Clayton Keller (BU) in the left corner. He sent a cross-ice pass across the slot to Kieffer Bellows (BU) for the one-timer from the bottom of the right circle.
Will Lockwood (Michigan) skated in and hit the brakes in the left corner. A Prineton forecheck popped the puck loose but it went right to the tape of Trent Frederic (Wisconsin) who wrapped around the right side and past netminder Ben Halford at 1:41.
Princeton outshot USA 7-5 in the second and had some nice chances but Jake Oettinger (BU) stood tall. Sophomore Eric Robinson had a bid on an odd-man rush followed by freshman Max Véronneau's quick rip from the high slot that was paddled away. Véronneau another shot from inside the left circle get gloved down before hitting the pipe as he kept knocking on the door. Another close moment came when senior Kyle Rankin had a redirection off a Matt Nelson point shot that went just wide.
Two seconds after a Spencer Kryczka penalty expired at 5:57 of the third, the Red, White and Blue scored its third goal. A face-off won in the neutral zone was corralled by Adam Fox (Harvard). He found Keller at the blue line and he sent the puck to Kieffer Bellows for the backdoor goal.
Sophomore David Hallisey put the Tigers on the board at 10:17 with help from junior Ben Foster and senior Kevin Liss. Robinson had a shot deflect off a USA skater and it popped out to the left point to Liss. Liss found Foster at the bottom of the left circle and pushed the puck ahead to Hallisey on the doorstep for the tally.
Princeton put an extra skater on the ice for the final 1:15, but after Patrick Khodorenko lofted the puck down the ice, ringing it off the pipe, it was a race for the puck. The 6-7 Keenan Suthers (Western Michigan) had the reach and swept it into the empty net with 22 seconds left on the clock.
Sophomore Ben Halford made 13 saves and allowed three in the game's first 45:59. Freshman Austin Shaw stopped all five shots he faced in 12:46.
Oettinger made 18 saves as the Under-18 team improves to 21-4-1.
Princeton will take a break for the December holiday and returns to the ice on Dec. 28 & 29 as the Tigers take on travel partner Quinnipiac in a home-and-home series.
