PRINCETON, N.J. (12/29/15) - The No. 3-ranked Quinnipiac men's hockey team earned a 6-0 win over Princeton tonight in Game 1 of the home-and-home series. It was the first game back from a 17-day holiday break for both squads.
The teams played before a standing-room only crowd, which came in as the second-highest attendance in Hobey Baker Rink history.
Quinnipiac, ranked No. 3 in the USCHO.com poll and No. 2 by USA Today in the latest poll, put out on Dec. 14, stays unbeaten in ECAC action at 7-0-2 and improves to 16-1-2 overall.
A five-goal first period put the game out of reach and Princeton wasn't able to climb out of the rut."Quinnipiac is a good team,” Princeton head coach Ron Fogarty said. “As coaches we speak to the media, a lot of times you say what went wrong with your team and that was a poor performance and you give all the clichés when in fact you have to look at the other team and say that's a pretty damn good hockey team. And that's what the difference was. Anas, St. Denis, the goaltender, that's the difference. We don't have that, but they do. That's whey they're No. 1 in the country and that's why we got beat 6-0.”
Connor Clifton put the Bobcats on the board at 1:34 with help from Kevin McKernan and Thomas Aldworth. Clifton took the initial shot from the right point that went into the corner, and after a skirmish the puck popped free and back to Clifton at the right point who went glove side on Colton Phinney.
K.J. Tifenwerth expanded the lead at 5:13 with an unassisted goal. A Princeton clear got caught in the neutral zone and Tiefenwerth got his stick on it, deked his defender and tucked the puck over the glove of Phinney.
Derek Smith shot through traffic after Tim Clifton's shot was deflected into the corner and collected by Connor Clifton and scored at 6:52.
Two power-play goals followed, with Tim Clifton tallying one just eight seconds after the Bobcats went on the man advantage for the first time. Travis St. Denis added the final goal of the period, at 16:34, on a back door feed from Tim Clifton.
The lone goal of the second period was Tanner MacMaster from Soren Jonzzon at 2:03. A turnover in the neutral zone landed on Jonzzon's stick at the checkered red and he was off to the races with MacMaster going high glove to make it 6-0.
Quinnipiac held a 43-23 edge in shots as Phinney had to make 36 saves.
Michael Garteig stopped 21 saves to earn the win before being replaced by Jacob Meyers, who made his first appearnce of the season. Meyers stopped three shots in the final 8:28.
Princeton falls to 4-10 on the season and 3-6 in league play.
Game 2 will take place on Wednesday night at High Point Solutions Arena in Hamden, Conn., at 7 p.m.
