BOX SCORE
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (12/4/15) - The Princeton men's hockey team defeated Brown 4-2 on Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium. Four different goals scorers led Princeton to its second consecutive ECAC victory. Colton Phinney made 36 saves, including 15 in the third period to earn the win in goal for the Tigers.
Tonight's game marked the fifth time this season that Princeton has scored three or more goals, and just the third time this season Brown has been held to two or fewer goals in a game. Tonight's four goals are the most goals the Tigers have scored since Jan. 28, 2015 when Princeton defeated Army 4-1.
Princeton got things going with two goals in a span of 1:33 in the middle of the first period. The Tigers converted on their first power-play opportunity of the game at 11:01 with a Ben Foster tally. Brown netminder Tim Ernst paddled the puck into the corner where it was collected by junior Tommy Davis. He shoved the puck behind the extended red to where freshman Alex Riche was stationed. Riche fed Foster in the high slot and he roofed a shot over the blocker of Ernst.
Sophomore Max Becker and senior Mike Ambrosia played catch near the blue line as Princeton defense switched out. Becker threw the puck down towards the net where three Bears and freshman Ryan Kuffner were positioned. Kuffner settled puck with his skate and swooped it over the pad of Ernst at 12:34.
Less than two minutes later, Tyler Bird put Brown on the board. Bird cut across the low slot and popped the puck in on an open right side. Max Willman and Tyler Wood assisted on the goal at 14:20.
Mark Naclerio tied the game up at 2:59 of the second with help from Tommy Marchin. Naclerio got the puck at the opposite blue line, had a quick pass to Marchin before he got it back. He used some stick work to get around a defender and put the puck between the left pipe and the blocker of Phinney.
Garrett Skrbich's first goal of the season regained the lead for Princeton at 6:55. Sophomore Joe Grabowski and senior Kyle Rankin patiently waited behind Phinney, letting the team get positioned before the restart. Skrbich collected the puck inside the blue line, wheeled around the back of the cage and pushed it in for the wraparound goal.
Princeton killed off two Grabowski penalties in the third period and thwarted an extra-skater attempt as Brown pulled Ernst with 1:33 remaining.
Junior Ryan Siiro sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 47 seconds remaining. He took the puck off of a Brown player's stick and gave it to Rankin. Rankin tried to send it down the ice but it bounced off of Siiro's skate. Siiro handled the puck, flipping it down into the empty net from the checkered red.
Brown again tried to get a third goal, pulled Ernst for the final 35 seconds but wouldn't be able to take a shot before the buzzer sounded.
Princeton will aim for another win tomorrow when it travels to No. 10 Yale for a 7 p.m., game. The Bulldogs lost 3-0 to No. 3 Quinnipiac this evening at the Whale.
