The Princeton men's swimming & diving team lead after one day of the 2015 Big Al Open, while the Tiger women are third — tops among their Ivy League rivals — with two days still remaining in the meet. The full weekend can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network (see link above).
The Princeton men lead the field with 352 points, while Pittsburgh is second with 265 and Brown in third with 220. On the women's side, Pittsburgh leads with 268 points, while Villanova (239) held off Princeton (215) for second place.
The Tiger men won four of the five swimming events during the session, including the 200 free relay. The quartet of En-Wei Hu-Van Wright, Julian Mackrel, Alex Lewis and Ben Schafer won the event in 1:18.83, more than two seconds faster than any team in the field.
Sophomore Corey Okubo and senior Teo D'Alessandro had a terrific showdown in the 200 IM, and Okubo came away with the win in 1:46.33, while D'Alessandro — the reigning Ivy champion in the event — took second in 1:47.01.
Following his leadoff leg in the 200 free relay win, Hu-Van Wright won the 50 free in 19.56; that time was just off his 19.55 in the relay, which was the fourth-fastest time in Princeton history. Schafer took second in the event in 20.30, and then he was part of a winning effort in the 400 medley relay; the team of Wright, Sanborn, Schafer, and Mackrel won the event in 3:11.87, while the team of Andrew Helber, Tyler Lin, Okubo and Sandy Bole took second in 3:16.77.
The first diving event of the weekend was the men's 1-meter competition, and junior Nathan Makarewicz finished third with 312.70 points.
The Princeton women had several top-five finishes during the opening session, including a fourth-place performance by freshman Isabel Reis in her Big Al debut. She went 2:02.64 in the 200 IM, topping teammate Beverly Nguyen (fifth place) by a slim margin.
Senior Elizabeth McDonald, the reigning Ivy League champion in the 50 free, took fifth in the event in 23.22, while freshman Monica McGrath went seventh in the 500 in 4:55.20.
The women opened the meet with a third place finish in the 200 free relay, as the quartet of McDonald, Maddy Veith, Nikki Larson, and Kathleen Mulligan swam the opening event of the finals session in 1:32.87. The quartet of Joanna Curry, Janet Zhao, Morgan Karetnick and Claire McIlmail took fifth in the 400 medley relay in 3:46.78.
