PRINCETON, N.J. – Turning in several strong performances, the Princeton University men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed out the second day of the 2015 Big Al Open atop the leaderboard.
Holding onto its day one lead, the Tiger men remain in first with 774.5 points, followed by Pittsburgh with 560 points. In third after the first day, the Princeton women jumped into first place with 618 points. Pittsburgh is just behind the Tigers with 610 points, while Villanova follows with 509 points.
The women started the evening with a fourth-place showing in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 1:42.65. Sada Stewart (4:19.36) and Beverly Nguyen (4:20.79) finished second and third in the 400 IM, before Morgan Karetneick took home the top honor in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.59. Nikki Larson (54.62), Elizabeth McDonald (54.86), and Isabel Reis (55.19) placed third through fifth. The Tigers' Elsa Welshofer rounded out the top-eight with a time of 55.49.
Claire McIlmail (1:49.66) finished just three tenths of a second behind Brown's Sarah Cronin (1:49.37) en route to a second-place showing in the 200 free. Alisabeth Marsteller (1:49.68) and Lindsay Temple (1:50.79) were third and eighth, respectively.
Olivia Chan (1:03.36) and Karen Zhang (1:03.85) came in fourth and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke before Temple took third in the 100-yard backstroke at 54.97. Princeton's 'A' team of Larson, Marsteller, McIlmail, and Reis were the runner-up in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:19.03.
The Tigers' 200-yard medley relay 'A' team of En-wei Hu-Van Wright, Jack Pohlmann, Ben Schafer, and Julian Mackrel won the day's first men's event with a time of 1:27.37. Princeton's 'B' squad of Alexander Lewis, Byron Sanborn, Teo D'Alessandro, and Sandy Bole were second with a time of 1:28.45.
Corey Okubo kept things rolling with a win in the 400 IM, touching in at 3:45.90. Brett Usinger and Sam Smiddy finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Schafer won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.61 with Zach Buerger (49.27) and Bole (49.70) coming in fifth and eighth. D'Alessandro was third in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:38.02 before Sanborn and Pohlmann took 1-2 in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 54.76 and 54.81.
Hu-Van Wright had the performance of the evening, as he broke the Princeton record in the 100 back with a winning time of 46.43. Lewis finished third with a time of 48.45. Schafer, D'Alessandro, Murphy McQuet, and Cole Buese helped the Tigers to a win in the 800-yard freestyle with a time of 6:32.24.
In the diving events, Princeton's Yasmeen Almog placed third in the women's 1-meter with a score of 236.95. In the men's 3-meter, Simon Adriano placed eighth with a score of 239.20.
