Wrestling Runs Win Streak To Four With Impressive 26-6 Win At Columbia
February 14, 2015 | Wrestling
Princeton won eight of 10 matches, including a wild 8-7 overtime win for freshman Jonathan Schleifer, to extend its win streak to four and move to 9-5 on the season.
“It was a great team effort tonight,” Ayres said. “The guys just wrestled really tough. We tell them all the time to wrestle seven minutes and just try to score in every position. Even the matches we lost, we really competed well. Since I've been here, this has been one of our best performances top to bottom.”
The Tigers got the start they were looking for from senior Ryan Cash, whose early takedowns set the foundation for a 6-3 win. Sophomore Jordan Laster and junior Chris Perez added wins at 141 and 149, and Rich Eva picked up his first dual win of the season 10-4 at 157.
Schleifer, who hit the 20-win mark last weekend, was pushed to the limit in an 8-7 win over Tyrel White. Despite an early takedown, White was able to rally and ultimately force overtime. Both escaped in the first, but Schleifer was able to use a riding time advantage to win 8-7.
Junior Judd Ziegler picked up his first Ivy League win in a tough 5-3 decision over Shane Hughes, and both Brett Harner and Abram Ayala picked up their team-best 24th wins by major decision.
Princeton will look for its most impressive win of the season Saturday afternoon when it heads to New Brunswick to take on 21st-ranked Rutgers at 2 pm.
