Hompe Scores Four Goals in No. 11 Princeton's 8-4 Win Over Drexel
February 26, 2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Princeton jumped out to a 5-0 lead at halftime and did a tremendous job on the ride, forcing Drexel into six failed clears on 10 attempts in the first half.
Freshman Hayley Giraldi opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal and the Inside Lacrosse National Player of the week Erin Slifer made it 2-0 less than two minutes later. Hompe scored back-to-back goals with slifer and senior Erin McMunn assisting. McMunn set up junior Anya Gersoff for the Tigers fifth goal with 1:33 to play in the first half.
Drexel had just five shots in the first half, with sophomore Ellie DeGarmo stopping all five to keep the clean slate.
"I think it's always nice to get your first goal of the season out of the way," Hompe said. "I think we played a really great game on Saturday and coming off that energy was exciting today and we got a couple of kids scoring than we did Saturday which was great and it shows our offense is really diverse and we have a lot of talent out there.
Ellie in goal was fantastic and she made a ridiculous amount of saves and it was great to see. We have a good rhythm, we hit a lot of posts and had a lot of shots that didn't go our way but we percivered and that was good to see."
The Dragons took control in the second half, as the Tigers sat back a bit. Drexel outscored Prineton 4-3 in the final 30 minutes and took 18 shots to Princeton's nine - quite a difference from the 15-8 edge Princeton had in the first half.
Drexel would get as close as four goals, with Devin Nilhill scoring twice and Milan White and Lacey Aghazarian putting up markers. Hompe added two of the Princeton's three goals in the third with McMunn coverting a free position as well.
Princeton held a 10-4 edge in draw controls and won the ground ball battle 17-13. Drexel improved on clearing in the second half, missing just once, to finish 12 for 19, while Princeton was 10 for 12.
DeGarmo made a career-high 11 saves in her second consecutive victory for the Tigers. On the opposite end Teresha Bradley stopped eight shots in goal for Drexel.
Hompe's four goals bests the three she had versus Georgetown last year. McMunn tallied a goal and three helpers, while Slifer had a goal and an assist.
Now 2-0 overall, Princeton will play its first road game of the season, facing Gerogetoen on Saturday, Feb. 28. Game time is at 3 p.m.
