PRINCETON, N.J. (2/4/15) - Princeton travels to Central New York this weekend in hopes of making some movement in the ECAC standings. On Friday, head coach Ron Fogarty and assistant Brad Dexter will coach in their first game against their alma mater, as Princeton takes on No. 20 Colgate at 7 p.m. Princeton will then face Cornell at Lynah Rink on Saturday at 7 p.m.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton went 1-1-1 last week with a win over Army followed by a loss at Yale and a tie with Brown. Overall the Tigers are 3-15-2 and are 1-12-1 in the ECAC. This week's ECAC Player of the Week, junior Jonathan Liau leads the team in scoring with four goals and seven assists for 11 points. Sophomore Ben Foster adds three goals and six assists for nine points. Senior defender Aaron Ave and junior Kyle Rankin contribute seven points apiece. Sophomore Colton Phinney has started in net for all but one game and has a .911 save percentage and a 3.25 GAA. Friday's game at Colgate will mark the return to Starr Rink for head coach Ron Fogarty (Colgate Class of '95) and assistant coach Brad Dexter (Colgate Class of '96).
THE PRINCETON/COLGATE SERIES
Colgate holds a slight edge in the all-time series with Princeton, 51-46-6. The Raiders have won the last three meetings including a 5-1 game in November at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton's last win was a 4-2 game in Hamilton in Feb. 2013. Mike Ambrosia has four points in four games versus Colgate, while Aaron Kesselman has five points in six games. Colton Phinney is looking for his first win in goal against the Raiders after going 0-3 in his first three games.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate is ranked No. 20 in the latest USCHO poll with a 14-9-3 overall record. The Raiders are tied for sixth in the ECAC standings, along with Cornell, with a 6-5-3. Colgate went 0-1-1 against its travel partner last weekend, losing at home 2-1 in OT before a 2-2 tie at Lynah Rink. The Raiders haven't won a game since a 5-4 win over Union on Jan. 17, going 0-2-2 since. Juniors Kyle Baun and Tyson Spink lead the team in scoring with 23 and 21 points, respectively. Baun has a team-high 11 goals and a team-high 12 assists, while Spink has scored 10 goals and 11 assists. Classmate Darcy Murphy adds 16 points, while senior Joe Wilson has 14. Four other players, including three defenders, are also in double figures in scoring. Sophomore Charlie Finn has started in goal in all but one game and has a 14-8-3 record with a .922 save percentage and a 2.10 GAA.
THE PRINCETON/CORNELL SERIES
Cornell owns an 83-54-8 lead in the all-time series. The Tigers won the last game, 2-1, which was the home opener, ECAC opener and lone league victory for Princeton. Aaron Ave is the only active player to have recorded more than one point on the Big Red, with a goal and an assist in eight games played. Colton Phinney is 1-0 with 40 saves on 41 shots.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell enters the weekend 9-9-3 ad is tied for sixth place in the ECAC standings with a 7-6-1 mark. The team most recently earned three points over Colgate with an OT victory and a tie. The Big Red has the second-best scoring defense in the league (1.81) and the best penalty kill in the league (90.7). Senior Cole Badreau has a team-best 10 assists and three goals to lead the team in the points with 13. Junior Christian Hilbrich has scored the most goals, seven, while chipping in three assists for 10 points. Sophomore Jake Weidner also has 10 points on two tallies and eight apples. Sophomore Mitch Gillam has played the majority of time in goal and has a .946 save percentage and a 1.46 GAA. Freshman Hayden Stewart backs up and owns a .931 save percentage and a 2.10 GAA in more than 300 minutes.
