Men's Tennis Rolls Past William & Mary to Start Three-Match Weekend
February 06, 2015 | Men's Tennis
The strong start to the new dual-match season continued Friday for the Princeton men's tennis team, which swept the doubles point and took five of six singles matches to beat William & Mary 6-1.
The win lifts Princeton to a 3-0 record to start the season, something the team did last season on the way to a 5-0 start. The Tigers have now started 3-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1995 and '96.
Princeton got out to a 3-0 lead against the Tribe thanks to the doubles point and wins on the first two courts from Zack McCourt and Josh Yablon. William & Mary pulled to within 3-1 with a win on court four, but the Tigers took the last three matches on court to reach the 6-1 final.
The match was the first of three on the weekend for Princeton in Jadwin Gym, which will host a doubleheader Saturday against Bucknell at 9 a.m. and Furman at 1 p.m. The Furman match will be part of the USTA's Campus Kids Day event, featuring free pizza and drinks, an autograph signing and prizes, and a clinic from Princeton players following the match for kids in eighth grade or younger. A flyer for the event is available at the PDF link on this page.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "We made a point this week of stressing the importance of starting the doubles with positive energy and intensity. We did a nice job of that today in getting out to early leads. That carried over to singles, though I felt we did have a bit of a lull at times. William & Mary has some very good players and the last thing we wanted to do was give them an opening. It's something to work on as we return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader." |
