HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/6/15) - Princeton dropped a 2-0 game at No. 20 Colgate on Friday at Starr Rink. The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the second before sealing the win with an empty-net goal with 12 seconds to play in the game.
Despite a short lineup the Tigers played well against the No. 20-ranked Raiders.
Both teams had a quality chances to get on the scoreboard first in the first period but it wasn't meant to be.
Colgate's Joe Wilson scored the eventual game winner 53 seconds into the second period when he redirected a shot from the point by Anthony Sanniti after a Tylor Spink face off victory.
It was near the end of the second period that the ice started to tilt a bit in favor of Colgate as they rang a few pucks off the post, and tried to expand its lead. At the end of the 40 minutes, netminder Colton Phinney had 24 saves under his belt.
The Raiders continued where they left off in the second, but Phinney was unstoppable making another 10 saves.
With 26 seconds remaining Phinney was pulled in favor of the extra attacker and 11 seconds later Princeton suffered a setback when Tommy Davis was called for hooking. Off the ensuing faceoff in the Princeton zone, Mike Borkowski won the draw and found Darcy Murphy who wristed a shot in to the empty net to seal the win.
It was a more disciplined Princeton team that drew just three penalties, half of what the team has averaged this year.
Phinney finished the game with 34 saves, while Colgate's Charlie Finn stopped 19 shots on the other end.
Princeton takes on Cornell on Saturday night, Feb. 7, at Lynah Rink at 7 p.m.
