Women Tie For Second, Men For Third at Ivy League Fencing Championships
February 09, 2015 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
When it's been six years since a Princeton fencing team hasn't brought home an Ivy League title, that's been a good run.
Indeed, for the first time since 2009, both Princeton teams came up short at the Ivy Round-Robins at Columbia, the women seeing their five-year Ivy title streak end despite winning four of six matches and the men taking their quest for a first Ivy title since 2012 to the final bout of the final match against Harvard before ultimately finishing 3-2.
Princeton's women entered the day with a 2-1 record near the top of a crowded field. A 15-12 loss to open Monday's action hampered Princeton's chances at the Ivy title, and Columbia closed the door on the rest of the field by running the table to finish 6-0.
Though Penn's men entered Monday's action at 2-0, a 15-12 Tiger win over the Quakers kept Princeton, and Columbia and Harvard, at the top of the list for title contenders. Princeton then took care of business against Brown to set up an all-or-nothing match with Harvard, with not only Princeton and Harvard but also Columbia and Penn entering Monday's final round at 3-1. The winners of the Harvard-Princeton and Columbia-Penn matches would share the Ivy title.
Columbia's men beat Penn to win its share of the title, and though Harvard led Princeton 13-10, the Tigers stayed alive long enough to tie it at 13-13 before Harvard won the clincher.
Junior Anna Van Brummen led all women's épée fencers at 17-0 and one of three fencers across all weapons, both men and women, to finish unbeaten with enough bouts to qualify for the standings. Sophomore Alex House co-led the men's épée standings at 11-4.
Both Van Brummen and House earned first-team All-Ivy League honors, the second first-team all-league recognition for House, who earned Most Outstanding Rookie last year, and the third for Van Brummen, who has earned first-team all-league in all three of her seasons at Princeton.
Freshman saber Edward Chin, freshman foil Thomas Dudey, sophomore épée Jack Hudson, junior saber Desirae Major, senior foil Sharon Gao and junior épée Isabel Ford all won second-team All-Ivy recognition. The honor is the second for Major and Gao, each of whom was second-team All-Ivy last year.
