Fencers Set for NCAA Championships at Ohio State
March 18, 2015 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
In the video above, Ashley Tsue and Edward Chin talk about heading to the NCAA Championships.
Two years removed from its NCAA title, Princeton will head to the NCAA Championships at Ohio State beginning Thursday.
Columbia and Notre Dame were the only two schools to qualify the maximum 12 fencers to the NCAA finals, and Princeton is right behind with 11.
The men are up first this year, with foil competition starting at 9:30 a.m., épée at 11:30 and saber at 2 p.m. for the first three of five rounds. All three weapons will start at 9 a.m. Friday to finish pool competition with individual semifinals and finals beginning at 1:30 p.m. Épée, foil and then saber are the order for the individual semis and finals.
The women's competition will get going Saturday, following the same time frame and format over both Saturday and Sunday as in the men's competition.
Each weapon will have 24 men's and women's fencers, and each fencer will have a five-touch bout against each of the 23 fencers in his or her weapon over the two days of men's or women's competition. Each win counts as a point for the team, and the team with the most points across both men's and women's competition wins the team title, the same one that Princeton won in 2013. The individual semis and finals do not count toward the team total, but the Tigers have won two of those in recent years just the same, with a men's épée win from Jonathan Yergler '13 in 2012 and a women's saber win from Eliza Stone '13 in 2013.
Princeton is also the only team to finish in the top two in the team standings in each of the last three years and the only team fo finish in the top four in each of the last four years. The Tigers will be sending four previous All-America honorees to this year's NCAA meet, including Ambika Singh, who is seeking to become Princeton's second women's foil to be a four-time All-America, joining Jacqueline Leahy '06.
