Women's Tennis Opens Spring Trip, Knocks Off No. 31 Long Beach State
March 19, 2015 | Women's Tennis
Seventeen days away from formal competition didn't take anything away from the Princeton women's tennis team, which knocked off an ITA-ranked opponent for the second straight match in upsetting No. 31 Long Beach State 6-1 Wednesday afternoon on the 49ers' home courts.
Princeton was left out of the latest ITA rankings released Tuesday, but the Tigers began to take advantage of the opportunity to change that. The Tigers will have two more chances this week to knock off ranked teams, with a trip to No. 67 San Diego State coming Friday and a match against No. 11 Oklahoma State to come Saturday at Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
Princeton began the afternoon by winning the doubles point, with Lindsay Graff and Alanna Wolff winning on court one and Katrine Steffensen and Emily Hahn on court three each winning 8-3 to overcome a tiebreak loss on court two.
Graff, Wolff, Steffensen, Dorothy Tang and Katie Goepel then contributed wins in singles play, all but Graff's coming in three sets. Graff's was the only singles match not to go the distance, with Amanda Muliawan fighting back to take her middle set 6-3 on court two after a tiebreak loss in the first set, but opponent Ebba Unden squeaked out a 7-5 win in the final frame.
