Women's Tennis Gets Past San Diego State, 4-3
March 21, 2015 | Women's Tennis
Picking up a second win in as many matches on the spring trip, the Princeton women's tennis team defeated No. 67 San Diego State 4-3 Saturday evening in California.
The match ended unfortunately, with Aztecs player Jana Buth suffering an injury in the last match on court. Buth and Katrine Steffensen were locked in a battle for the match, with Steffensen having rallied to win the second set 6-3 after losing the first set in a tiebreaker. Steffensen was a point away from pushing the third set to a 6-5 advantage when the injury occurred, and the match was called.
"It came down to the last match between Katrine and Jana Buth," Princeton head coach Laura Granville said. "Both players fought extremely hard and wanted to win for their team. We hope that Jana is able to recover because she has a great future ahead in college tennis and our team respects how hard she worked and played in today's match."
Princeton opened the match by sweeping the doubles point and allowing a total of six games across the three matches.
The teams split the singles matches, with Lindsay Graff and Dorothy Tang finishing out victories for the Tigers along with Steffensen's win by retirement.
The win was Princeton's fourth in a row and third straight over a ranked opponent. Since an 0-5 start, the Tigers have won six of seven heading into Saturday's match against 11th-ranked Oklahoma State. That match will be played at Del Mar Country Club with a 2 p.m. ET start.
