Men's Tennis Tops Indiana to Open San Diego Trip
March 19, 2015 | Men's Tennis
Princeton will advance in the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic after winning its first-round match for the first time in three trips to the event, defeating Indiana 4-1 Thursday morning.
The 32nd-ranked Tigers won their fifth match in a row and broke a two-match skid against ranked teams with a win over the No. 39 Hoosiers, giving Princeton its sixth win over an ITA-ranked opponent this season. It was also Princeton's first win over a Big Ten team since 2013 after two straight losses to Penn State in the interim.
Princeton opened with wins on the second and third doubles courts, never giving up more than three games before clinching the point. Though Indiana pulled even with a win on court four to open singles play, Princeton won the next three matches off court, with Kial Kaiser on six, Zack McCourt on one and finally Alex Day on three.
Princeton will have another chance to pick up a win over a ranked opponent Friday at 4 p.m. ET against No. 30 San Diego, a 4-3 winner over No. 43 Denver Thursday. Live scoring vs. San Diego

Coach Billy Pate on the matches: "We really jumped off to a great start in doubles and played a strong doubles point. IU is a tough team that is well coached, so they rebounded after doubles and really pushed us in singles. We had to manage the momentum as the match progressed and I feel like once we saw the finish line, we did a great job of elevating our focus and getting the fourth point." |
