March 20, 2015 | Men's Tennis
No. 32 Princeton's bid to advance to the final of the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic came up short Friday afternoon with co-host No. 30 San Diego sweeping Princeton 4-0.
The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker on court one between a pair of ranked opponents, No. 41 Filip Vittek and Jordan Angus for the Toreros and No. 56 Thomas Colautti and Zack McCourt for the Tigers, with the USD team taking both that match and the point with a 7-3 win in the breaker.
USD kept on rolling through singles play, with wins on court three, five and two to clinch the match and end the afternoon.
Princeton will play a consolation match against No. 22 Harvard, which lost to No. 33 Drake 4-3 earlier Friday, Saturday at 1 p.m. ET at USD. The Ivy rivals have already met once this season, with Harvard winning 4-2 on Feb. 15 in the ECAC semifinals to give Princeton its first loss of the spring.

Coach Billy Pate on the matches: "USD played a great match and really used the doubles point to get the edge and run with it. We had a great opportunity to get the doubles by having a match point at 5-3 and then serving for it and at 5-4 in the No. 1 position. We really struggled to gain a foothold in any singles match early and just simly didn't execute. We're disappointed in that, but we'll bounce back and be ready for Harvard tomorrow." |
