Fencing Brings Home Fifth Straight Trophy from NCAA Finals
March 22, 2015 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Entering this year's NCAA Championships, Princeton's fencing program was the only one to have finished in the top four in each of the last four years. Now, the Tigers are the only program to have finished in the top four in each of the last five years.
Princeton was able to add to the Stan Sieja Fencing Room trophy case by winning 148 bouts to finish fourth, 17 off the pace set by Columbia in winning its first NCAA title since 1993 and eight back of both Penn State and Notre Dame, which finished second and third.
Columbia's title makes it two in three years for the Ivy League along with Princeton's title in 2013. All seven of the Ivy's fencing programs finished in the top 18, and Ivies represented four of the top eight spots with Harvard and Penn taking seventh and eighth behind Ohio State and St. John's.
Just as Princeton did with the men's competition, which wrapped up Friday, Princeton advanced one fencer to the semifinals with épée Anna Van Brummen gaining a berth after winning 17 bouts to gain the second seed in the semis. Isis Washington of St. John's defeated Van Brummen on the final touch of their semifinal bout, 15-14, in a match that was never more than one touch apart.
Van Brummen was one of five Princeton women's fencers to earn All-America honors, along with fellow junior épée Isabel Ford, who finished seventh, and sabers freshman Allison Lee and junior Gracie Stone, who finished seventh and eighth. Sophomore foil Ashley Tsue earned All-America recognition by finishing 10th, while senior weaponmate Ambika Singh placed 18th.
