Second-Half Scoring Surge Gives No. 11 Princeton a 19-7 Win Over Cal

PRINCETON, N.J. (3/25/15) - Eight Tigers scored goals, with Erin Slifer, Olivia Hompe and Anna Doherty leading the charge with four apiece, as No. 11 Princeton defeated the University of California 19-7, thanks to an 11-1 second-half offensive explosion.
The Tigers took a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game, with goals from junior Anya Gersoff, sophomore Lauren Steidl, Doherty and Slifer. A 3-1 Cal (2-7) run saw the lead evaporate to two, 5-3 at the midway point of the first half. Hompe and Doherty scored within nine seconds of each other, as Doherty won the draw, raced down and beat the goalie. It was marked the first of two occassions Doherty would make that play leading her to a big night.
The Bears made it a one-goal game, 7-6, after Parker Garrett net her second of the night and Gaby Christman scored twice. Doherty ended the run with the final marker of the first half, with Princeton leading 8-6.
It was all Tigers in the second half as Princeton rattled off nine straight goals to take a 17-6 lead. Brittany Ward helped Cal evade a second-half shutout with the Bears' lone goal at 6:31.
Junior Anna Menke scored two final goals, her first two goals of the season, in the final 35 seconds of the game.
Princeton outshot Cal 36-13, and dominated the ground ball battle 17-6. The Tigers also pulled down more draw controls, 17-10.
Slifer had a game-high six points on four goals and three assists, while adding five draw controls, one ground ball and causing one turnover. Hompe had four goals and one assist, while winning two draws and picking up three ground balls. In addition to Doherty's four goals she had three draws, two ground balls and caused two turnovers. Gersoff added two goals and won three draws and sophomore defender Madeline Rodriguez caused two turnovers. Nearly every Tiger saw playing time tonight. Off the bench it was Menke leading the way with two goals, while freshman Camille Sullivan had a goal and an assist and won two draws.
Senior Annie Woehling earned the win in goal as she made one save on four shots in 37 minutes of action. She also caused two turnovers with her impressive play outside the crease. Sophomore Ellie DeGarmo made one save on five shots in the first 19:34 before she was replaced by Woehling. Freshman Mary Kate McDonough made her first collegiate appearance in goal, playing the final 3:33.
Helen Hansen made the start and earned the loss allowing 13 goals on 14 shots in 32 minutes. Kate Gutierrez had the better day, making six saves on 12 shots. She came in after Princeton took the 4-0 lead and played the remainder of the first half. Hansen started and played the entirety of the second half. Christman and Garrett each scored twice to lead the Bears offensively.
Princeton, now 7-1, concludes its four-game homestand on Saturday when it hosts Delaware. The Blue Hens are receiving votes in this week's IWLCA national poll, as they come to town with a 7-4 overall record.
