HANOVER, N.H. (3/7/15) - Junior Stephanie Paloscio had two goals and two assists to lead the No. 10-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team to an 8-5 win over Dartmouth in the Ivy League opener on Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field.
Freshman Camille Sullivan finished with two goals and one assist, while sophomore Olivia Hompe and freshman Haley Giraldi had two goals apiece. Sophomore Ellie DeGarmo earned the victory in goal making five saves. Senior Erin Slifer held the team's leading scorer, Jaclyn Leto, scoreless and without a single shot on goal.
Highlighting Dartmouth (0-4, 0-1 Ivy) was the play of first-year starter goalie and senior Jessica Frieder. She finished with a career-high 12 saves, including eight in the first half that resulted in the teams being tied 3-3 at halftime.
"It's great to win the Ivy opener," Princeton head coach Chris Sailer said. "Dartmouth came out so hard and was going after it like we knew they would. It was an incredibly physical game. Our team did a great job pulling it out and making plays when they counted and it's awesome to start the league with a W."
Princeton (4-0, 1-0 Ivy) looked to be in control of the game from the very start – winning the opening draw and Hompe scoring a free-position goal. The Tigers forced the Big Green into turnovers on their first two possessions, the first a strip at the restraining line and the second coming during the ride.
Dartmouth's third possession was a long one and resulted in a free-position goal by Sarah Byrne.
Giraldi regained the lead for Princeton with Sullivan assisting at 19:44.
Byrne shot high on DeGarmo for her second goal of the game and Larson Bennett gave Dartmouth its first lead of the game at 14:03 – forcing Princeton to call a timeout.
Paloscio had a great fake that led the tying goal at 8:01. Instead of shooting on Frieder, she passed to Hompe on the weak side and Hompe buried it to close out the scoring in the first half.
A two-goal run in the first seven minutes of the second half gave Princeton a two-goal edge, 5-3. Paloscio set up Giraldi and then got herself in the goal column.
Larson Bennett brought her team back within one, two minutes later, when she beat both her defender and DeGarmo for the goal.
Sullivan tallied her first goal of the afternoon and Paloscio followed up with her second, coming from behind the cage for wrap as the Tigers gained its largest lead, 7-4, with less than 14 minutes to play.
A yellow card on Danielle Lisovicz at 10:06 gave Princeton possession and the opportunity to run some time off the clock.
The Big Green eventually got the ball back after a Hompe shot was saved by Frieder and Leto got the ground ball. It led to Dartmouth's final goal, Sydney Ellis from Byrne.
Princeton won the ensuing draw and Frieder came out of the game leaving an net open for Sullivan's second goal at 1:11.
Dartmouth won the next draw and the shot by Sophie Davidson was wide, but DeGarmo backed up and gave Princeton the ball and that would be the last scoring opportunity of the game.
Princeton dominated the center circle, winning 12 of 15 draw controls. The teams had 10 ground balls apiece. Princeton caused seven turnovers and outshot Dartmouth 29-15.
Princeton takes on No. 8 Virginia a week from today, March 14 in Charlottesville.
