Men's Tennis Sweeps Sunday Twinbill, Blanking Binghamton, Army
March 08, 2015 | Men's Tennis
In the team's final day of competition before the spring trip to California, the Princeton men's tennis team swept Sunday's doubleheader, blanking Binghamton and Army with 7-0 scores.
Princeton opened the Binghamton match by sweeping the doubles point and followed that with six singles wins, four of those in straight sets with Luke Gamble providing the clincher.
The same formula with the same doubles lineup led to the afternoon's first point against Army, though the Tigers faced a challenge in singles with just one match, Diego Vives' win at fourth singles, going to Princeton without a third set or a tiebreaker. Vives' match made it 2-0 and Zack McCourt made it 3-0 by outlasting Army's top player Sam Lampman in a second-set tiebreak to close it out. Gamble again provided the clincher, beating Austin McCasin on court five by winning a second-set tiebreak for the afternoon's fourth point.
Princeton will be away from competition until Mar. 19, when the Tigers will play the first of three days at the University of San Diego's tournament. A bracket for the event will be announced closer to that date.

Coach Billy Pate on the matches: "Overall, I was very pleased with our effort and execution today. I was happy to see improved play in each of our doubles positions. We still have a bit of work to do in terms of our younger guys emotionally managing the ups and downs of their singles matches. Nonetheless, it was a productive weekend and we'll look forward to making the transition back outdoors as we travel to Southern California for three competitive matches for spring break." |
