Women's Tennis Tops Harvard to Stay Unbeaten in Ivy, Clinch Ivy Title Share
April 12, 2015 | Women's Tennis
Heading to New England for a pair of Ivy League matches was no problem for the Princeton women's tennis team, which knocked off two fellow ITA-ranked foes on the weekend, completing the sweep Sunday with a 5-2 victory at No. 63 Harvard.
Princeton, ranked 53rd in the nation entering the weekend, has now won 12 Ivy League matches in a row and stands at 5-0 in the Ivy and 11-7 overall while having won 11 of its past 13 matches overall.
Sunday's win, coupled with other results around the league, delivered the Tigers a share of the Ivy title, as every other team in the league has at least two losses and Princeton cannot finish with more than two losses. Winning one match next weekend will deliver Princeton the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The Ivy title is Princeton's 12th overall, all since 1979, second straight and fourth in the last seven years.
The Tigers rallied from dropping the doubles point Sunday to win by taking five of the six singles matches, including four wins in straight sets. A win by Dorothy Tang on court five in which she gave up only three games in getting the point tied things up at 1-1, and after a Harvard win on court two, Katrine Steffensen won on court for to square it again at 2-2. Alanna Wolff's win on court three put Princeton on the doorstep of victory, and Lindsay Graff came back to win in a third set on court one to provide the clincher. Katie Goepel's win on court six made the 5-2 final.
In pursuit of its second straight 7-0 Ivy League season, Princeton will open play next weekend at Columbia with a 2 p.m. match Friday. The Lions were ranked 46th on last Tuesday's ITA list, and Cornell, which stands at 3-2 in the Ivy, was unranked on last week's list. The Tigers and the Big Red will meet Sunday in Princeton.
