Trio of Tigers Earn ECAC Weekly Tennis Honors
April 22, 2015 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
Amanda Muliawan, Katrine Steffensen and Kial Kaiser have earned Corvias ECAC Division I Metro/Upstate weekly honors in men's and women's tennis.
Muliawan is the Corvias ECAC Division I Metro/Upstate Player of the Week for women's tennis after going 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 1-1 at No. 2 doubles in helping Princeton clinch the outright Ivy League championship and a return trip to the NCAA tournament. Sunday against Cornell, Muliawan rallied from being down 0-2 in the third set by winning six straight games to provide Princeton with the clinching point. It's the first ECAC weekly honor for Muliawan.
Steffensen went 1-1 at No. 4 singles and 2-0 at No. 3 doubles against Columbia and Cornell and has earned the women's Rookie of the Week honor for five straight weeks. Her win Sunday against Cornell was the first match to be decided, staking Princeton to a 2-0 lead in the eventual 4-3 win.
Kaiser earns his first ECAC weekly rookie award. He split his matches at Columbia and Cornell, and his win on court six against the Big Red provided a needed point in Princeton's 4-3 victory.
Both Princeton teams will await the NCAA selections next Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET for the women and 5:30 p.m. for the men, both streamed live on NCAA.com. The women, ranked 43rd in the nation, know they're in with the Ivy's automatic bid, and the men, ranked 36th, are in an encouraging spot for an at-large bid. If it comes, it'd be the first time the men have been to the NCAAs as a team since 1998, while the women are headed back for a second straight year.
