Men's Tennis Completes Weekend Sweep, Tops Yale 6-1
April 05, 2015 | Men's Tennis
Yale swept first Sunday against the Princeton men's tennis team, but the Tigers swept last and had six times the effect.
For the second straight match, the Tigers won all six singles matches, picking up a 6-1 win over Yale a day after defeating Brown by the same score following a doubles-point loss.
Yale took all three doubles matches to start the day, yielding more than four points in none of the three contests. But Princeton was able to turn the tables in singles play, winning all six matches and four in straight sets with Luke Gamble's victory at sixth clinching the match. Zack McCourt completed the sweep on court one by outlasting Tyler Lu in a second-set tiebreaker 11-9 after McCourt also won a tiebreaker to take the first set.
Along with moving Princeton to 3-0 in Ivy League play, the win gives Princeton 18 victories on the season, making the 2015 Tigers just the fourth team in program history to reach that number. The 1994 and 1996 teams also had 18 wins, and only the 1995 team won more, topping out at 20.
Princeton will have the chance to tie that record next weekend, hosting a pair of fellow ITA-ranked opponents in Dartmouth and Harvard Saturday and Sunday.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "It's highly unusual to lose the doubles point and win six singles matches, and we found a way to do that two days in a row. I was particularly frustrated with our doubles performance today, but we rebounded well again and played strong top-to-bottom in singles. It's nice to get two league wins on the road and we'll look forward to getting back to work at practice this week in preparation for a big homestand. It gets a lot tougher the next two weekends, but it also presents a great opportunity for the Ivy League race and NCAA implications." |
