Challenging Trip Ahead for Women's Tennis to Dartmouth, Harvard
April 08, 2015 | Women's Tennis
Indeed, the Princeton women's tennis team is the last team to be perfect in Ivy matches as the league season heads toward its second full weekend.
But, with the new Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings out Tuesday, No. 53 Princeton isn't the highest-ranked Ivy team on the list. Columbia, at No. 46, is ahead of Princeton, as is 37th-ranked Dartmouth. While a trip to Columbia will have to wait until next Friday, the Big Green are on the docket for the Tigers this weekend, followed by a trip to 63rd-ranked Harvard.
The ITA singles rankings had senior Lindsay Graff on the list for the first time this spring, with Princeton's No. 1 singles player checking in at No. 119. Though three of Princeton's nine doubles matches in Ivy play have gone unfinished with Princeton already having clinched the doubles point, the Tigers are unbeaten in doubles play on the league season and are 3-0 at three singles positions, at No. 1 with Graff, at No. 2 with junior Amanda Muliawan and at No. 4 with freshman Katrine Steffensen.
Princeton has won seven of its last eight matches including three wins in that stretch coming against ranked teams. The Tigers haven't faced a ranked Ivy opponent so far on the league season, though Yale, which Princeton defeated last time out last Saturday, entered the rankings this week at No. 75.
Saturday's match at Dartmouth and Sunday's at Harvard will both start at noon. Princeton swept last season's two meetings with the Big Green, including one in the ECAC Championship, and Dartmouth is trying to return the favor this year, opening ECAC play with a 4-0 win over the Tigers back in February. Dartmouth has won the last two meetings with Princeton in Hanover, with the Tigers' last win there coming in 2009. Princeton has fared better recenly against Harvard, having won five in a row since an ECAC loss back in 2010. In Ivy play, Harvard's last win in the series came in 2006.
