No. 1 Maryland Stays On Top with 18-10 Win Over No. 15 Princeton

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (4/8/15) - The No. 15 Princeton women's lacrosse team displayed a valiant effort at No. 1 Maryland but the Terrapins remain undefeated with an 18-10 win on Wednesday night. The Tigers led 6-4 at halftime, the only team this season to have led Maryland at the intermission.
Tied at 7-7 at 22:03 of the second half, Maryland (13-0) went on a 7-0 run to double up the Tigers, 14-7.
Sophomore Olivia Hompe stopped the run, but only momentarily, as Maryland added four more goals to take its largest lead, 18-8.
Senior Erin Slifer set up classmate Erin McMunn twice in 32 seconds for the final two goals of the game.
Slifer finished with a six-point game on two goals and four assists, while McMunn collected a hat trick. Junior Stephanie Paloscio and Hompe scored twice each. Sophomore Ellie DeGarmo made five saves in the loss, two from the eight-meter arc, before being replaced by senior Annie Woehling for the final 14:11. Woehling made four saves, two on eight-meter attempts, caused a turnover and had two ground balls.
Sophomore Anna Doherty and Paloscio gave Princeton (8-3) a 2-0 lead nine minutes into the game. Doherty converted on the Tigers' first free-position attempt before Slifer set up Paloscio for the second tally.
Kristen Lamon put away back-to-back feeds from Brooke Griffin and Kelly McPartland scored her first of her five goals as Maryland took its first lead 3-2 at 12:43.
Paloscio knotted the score at 3-3 with her 15th goal of the season at 11:29.
Two minutes later Megan Whittle converted a free-position attempt, as the game once again swung in the opposite direction.
The Tigers closed out the half on a 3-0 run, with Slifer and McMunn scoring unassisted goals and Slifer setting up Hompe on a man-up goal.
Maryland outshot Princeton 35-17, thanks to a 26-5 shot differential in the second half. It was the Tigers outshooting the Terps in the first, 12-9. Maryland won the draw control battle, 18-12, and the ground ball battle 14-11.
Whittle had a game-high six goals, while McPartland added one assist to her five goals. Lamon had a hat trick, while Griffin had three assists. The 2014 Tewaaraton Trophy winner, Taylor Cummings, was held to just two goals and an assist. Alex Fitzpatrick made six saves in goal.
It's all Ivy League from here on out for Princeton. The Tigers travel to Ithaca this Saturday, April 11 for a 3 p.m., game with Cornell.
