VESTAL, N.Y. (9/26/15) - Thomas Sanner scored twice in a span of 2:35 as the Princeton men's soccer team defeated Binghamton 3-1 on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
All of the game's goals came in the second half, with Princeton (3-2) taking a 3-0 lead.
Binghamton (5-4) had a heavy hand in possession in the first portion of the first half and it took less than a minute for junior Josh Haberman to make his first career save.
Sanner and senior Brendan McSherry had a few opportunities in the first half but the Tigers were called offsides twice. The best chance came in the 25th minute off of Nico Hurtado's second corner kick. The ball came from the left side and was served into the 18-yard box were Sanner got his head on the ball but it was flicked just wide of the left post.
The team started to get more physical and able to thread more balls together late in the first half and it continued in the second.
Sanner deflected in an excellent free kick by McSherry in the 62nd minute. McSherry took the shot from about 30 yards out, in front of the Princeton bench and Sanner solidified the shot by knocking it into the right corner.
In the 64th it was senior Greg Seifert setting up Sanner. Seifert had the ball on the right side of the 18-yard box and sent in into the center of the box where Sanner was wide open to pad the lead for the Tigers.
Sanner's two goals moves him into 13th all time in goal scoring at Princeton with 23 goals.
Seifert had a big play in the 80th minute when he helped block a shot from inside the 6-yard-box after Hummel was taken down trying to push the ball away.
McSherry increased the lead in the 77th minute with freshman Jeremy Colvin assisting. Colvin ran up the center of the field and found McSherry on the right flank and he ran in for the score.
McSherry nearly scored again a few minutes later but he couldn't get enough on the ball and it was knocked away.
Binghamton prevented the shutout with a Bret Celeste goal in the 81st minute. He had a free kick from 45 yards out that sailed over the outstretched hands of Hummel and into the net.
Colvin nearly got himself on the board in the 87th minute when he had a header off of a Hurtado cross but it was bobbled and stopped by keeper Robert Moewes.
Moewes finished the game with three stops.
Senior Ben Hummel replaced Haberman in goal at the start of the second half. Haberman made one save in the first 45 minutes, while Hummel made two stops in the second.Princeton hosts American on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
