PRINCETON, N.J. (9/29/15) - The viewers on ESPNU got more soccer than they bargained for as Princeton and American played to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Tuesday night on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Senior Thomas Sanner scored the go-ahead goal in the 11th minute, his fifth of the season. Sanner now ranks 13th all-time in scoring with 60 points and 13th in goals with 24. Sophomore Daniel Bowkett picked up his first career point assisting on the goal as he sent a long ball into the box where Sanner was able to head it into the goal after keeper Dylan Hobert came off his line.
A fluke goal in the 36th minute tied the game, as Panos Nahkid hit a long chip shot from 30 yards out.
American (6-3-1), a team receiving votes in the national poll one week after having been ranked No. 19, had a number of chances to score, and outshot Princeton (3-2-1) 21-9 overall. One of its best chances was its first when Vinny Barone had a header of the corner kick that just missed the left post. Hummel made his best save in the 28th minute when he stopped a header off a corner. In overtime he pounced on a cross from Nakhid, in the Eagles' best chance in extra time. Hummel finished the game with six saves.
The Princeton defense made a number of plays, including a great run by junior Mark Romanowski to prevent a one-on-one with Hummel as he sped up to the striker and kicked the ball out of bounds. Junior Patrick Barba and senior Josh Miller teamed up to prevent a goal in the 54th as Barba took out his defender and Miller slide tackled the ball out of play. Junior Greg Seifert had a highlight reel team save when he prevented a goal at the near post and the rebound was shot high over the cross bar.
The Tigers better opportunities came in the second half as they started to turn the run of play. In the 60th, freshman Jeremy Colvin had a nice cross to Sanner but it skipped too far out of reach. Miller tried his head in the 65th on a Nico Hurtado corner but it went just wide of the right post.
Princeton opens Ivy League play this weekend at Dartmouth, in a battle between last year's co-Ivy League champions. Game time is at 4 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 3 in Hanover, N.H.
