Women's Tennis Heads for Trio of Matches in Arizona
January 25, 2016 | Women's Tennis
After opening its season last Friday, the Princeton women's tennis team will head to Arizona for a trio of matches beginning Tuesday.
The 43rd-ranked Tigers swept Delaware 7-0 in the opener and will head west to face two fellow ITA-ranked teams on the three-match trip to Arizona. Grand Canyon is Princeton's first opponent Tuesday in Phoenix, followed by No. 27 Arizona State Thursday and No. 65 Arizona Friday.
First up for the Tigers will be Grand Canyon Tuesday in Phoenix. The Tigers and the Antelopes have never met on the tennis court, and GCU stands at 2-2 on the season after two weekends of matches with wins against UC Riverside and Colorado State and losses to UC Irvine and Air Force. UC Irvine was the only one of those four teams ranked in the ITA's top 75, checking in at No. 70 on the Jan. 20 list.
A rematch with Arizona State, two seasons after Princeton defeated the Sun Devils 4-3 in the first round of the NCAA tournament, will follow Thursday. ASU opened the season over the weekend at Oklahoma State as part of the ITA Kick-Off event, losing 4-2 to No. 26 Northwestern in the opener before defeating No. 32 Notre Dame 4-0 in the consolation round. The Sun Devils sport a ranked singles player in No. 75 Desirae Krawczyk and two ranked doubles teams with No. 39 Alexandra Osborne and Ebony Panoho and No. 42 Sammi Hampton and Kassidy Jump.
Princeton will close the week with a match Friday at Arizona, which opened its season Sunday with a 4-2 loss at Hawaii and will host UTEP Thursday. The Tigers and the Wildcats have never met, and Arizona has an ITA-ranked singles player in No. 64 Lauren Marker.
The trip to Arizona will be Princeton's first since 1981, when Princeton competed in the AIAW national tournament hosted by Arizona State.
