HANOVER, N.H. (1/30/16) - Despite a +14 shot differential the Princeton men's hockey team couldn't get one by the smooth play of Dartmouth goaltender Charles Grant tonight as the Big Green post a 2-0 victory from Thompson Arena on Saturday night.
The Tigers set the tone from the opening puck drop, taking five straight shots on goal before giving up a single shot on the opposite end. Princeton's (5-14-2, 3-9-2 ECAC) best chances included a Mike Ambrosia one-timer in the slot after he stripped a Big Green defender just 2:20 into the game and a Ben Foster left-to-right chance - both stopped by Grant.
Dartmouth (11-9-1, 8-6 ECAC) got on the board against the run of play at 8:34 of the first period on a goal by Alex Jasiek.
Princeton netminder junior Colton Phinney made the initial stop on Tim O'Brien and defender Josh Teves picked up the puck. Teves was checked into hard as he just looked up from getting the puck and he and the puck went flying. Phinney came out to try to settle the puck but instead Troy Crema got it and found Jasiek on the left side for the wide open net.
The first period was the only period in which Dartmouth outshot Princeton, 12-9 as the Tigers took it to the Big Green 17-4 in the second and then 11-7 in the third. Despite the differential, the Tigers couldn't break Grant who earned his third shutout of the season with 37 stops.
Jack Barre notched his 10th of the season just 19 seconds into the second in an odd-man rush situation. He had Carl Hesler to his left and just Tommy Davis in front. Davis, who scored his first goal of the season last night at Harvard, was in good position to either break up the pass or block the shot, but Barre snuck it by him at the last second and between Phinney's glove and the right post.
During Princeton second straight power play in less than 30 seconds, the Tigers elected to pull Phinney in favor of the extra attacker at 15:09. The offense poured the shots on but couldn't get the 6x4 goal before the penalty expired. Phinney briefly returned to his net before going back out with 1:57 left in the game but the Tigers were unlucky with the bounces.
Princeton was 0 for 3 on the power play and 1 for 1 on the penalty kil.
The Tigers will return home to host Colgate & Cornell next weekend Feb. 5 & 6 at Hobey Baker Rink.
