PRINCETON, N.J. (10/10/16) - A classic New Jersey rivalry resumes on Tuesday night when Rutgers hosts Princeton in men's soccer at Yurcak Field at 7 p.m.
Princeton leads the series, 27-20-9, since the teams first met in 1951. It's been a physical battle the last few years, with six cautions and one red card coming in the last meeting - a 5-2 Princeton victory on Oct. 8, 2014. Thomas Sanner '16 had a hat trick and one assist, while Cameron Porter '15 had two goals and one assist. Both went on to be Major League Soccer draft picks. Hermann Trophy Watch List member Jason Wright scored both goals for the Scarlet Knights. Both teams utilized two keepers in the game, as Princeton outshot Rutgers 22-14.
The Tigers are looking to recover from a 1-0 loss to Brown from Saturday night. Princeton is still on the right side of .500 at 5-4-1 and is 5-3 against non-conference opponents and 3-1 against teams from New Jersey, which includes a 3-1 win over Seton Hall last week. Senior Greg Seifert lead the team offensively with 12 points on five goals and two assists, while freshman Benjamin Martin has seven points on three goals and one assists. Senior midfielder Vikram Pothuri follows with four points and seven Tigers sit one point back with three points apiece. Senior Josh Haberman has a 1.16 goals against average and a .745 save percentage, stopping 35 of 47 shots on goal.
Rutgers may be 0-8-2 on the season but their quality of opponents is off the charts. They opened the season with Creighton and Denver, while also played Maryland and Indiana. In the team's most recent outing the squad played to a 1-1 draw with Michigan. The Scarlet Knights have been shut out of scoring in six of 10 games, averaing just 0.80 goals per game while giving up 2.50 goals per game. Niel Guzman has scored three goals and two assist while Wright has three goals and one assist. Dante Perez chips in two goals and one assist for five points, but is just one caution away from an ejection. David Greczek has played every minute in goal and has a 2.36 GAA and a.699 save percentage.
