Senior Katharine Holmes and junior Thomas Dudey led Princeton women's and men's fencers competing at the October North American Cup event in Detroit, which wrapped Monday.
Holmes tied for third of 148 competitors in the Division I women's épée event, just two spots ahead of senior teammate Anna Van Brummen, while freshman Kasia Nixon placed ninth. Van Brummen and Nixon each had perfect 6-for-6 pool-round finishes while Holmes went 5-1. Once the direct-elimination round began, Nixon advanced to the round of 16 where she fell to Holmes' Olympic teammate Kelley Hurley 15-7 while Holmes and Van Brummen met in the quarterfinals with Holmes winning 15-12. Courtney Hurley defeated her Olympic teammate Holmes 15-14 in the semifinals.
Dudey took sixth of 233 in the men's foil event with freshman teammate Samuel Barmann placing 62nd. Dudey went 6-0 in the pool round before advancing to the quarterfinals.
Princeton had two current fencers in the women's foil event, with senior Ashley Tsue placing 62nd, freshman Angela Li taking 80th, and five current and alumni competitors in the men's épée event, with sophomore Wesley Johnson placing 17th, Jonathan Yergler '13 tying for 27th, senior Alex House taking 33rd, freshman Wesley Yuan tying for 68th and sophomore Arjuna Subramanian placing 157th. In the women's saber event, Eliza Stone '13 placed 15th and sophomore Sage Palmedo placed 17th.
Princeton will begin its 2016-17 season Nov. 5 at the Penn Elite Invitational.
