Alex Riche had both Princeton goals in Friday's season opener.
Riche Scores Twice as Michigan State Tops Tigers in Season Opener
October 28, 2016 | Men's Ice Hockey
Sophomore Alex Riche had both Princeton goals, but Michigan State spoiled the season opener for the Tiger men's hockey team in a 6-2 win Friday night in East Lansing, Mich.
The Spartans outshot the Tigers 34-23 and opened the scoring with a Villiam Haag power-play goal four minutes into the game. Princeton kept it at 1-0 until Brennan Sanford scored 32 seconds into the second period, and Riche put the deficit back at one goal with an even-strength goal less than four minutes into the middle frame.
Despite Riche's two goals both coming in the second period, that middle stanza tipped the game Michigan State's way, with the Spartans scoring four times and heading into the final intermission with a 5-2 lead. Joe Cox was the sixth Spartan to score, putting in a goal midway through the third for the 6-2 final. Riche's second goal, which tied his season total from his rookie campaign last winter, pulled Princeton within 4-2 with five-plus minutes to go in the second.
Colton Phinney made 28 saves in the loss. The Tigers will play Saturday night in Plymouth, Mich., against the U.S. U-18 team at 7 p.m.
