No. 10 Tigers Finish Regular Season With Eye At NWPC No. 1 Seed
November 03, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – After getting back into the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Poll top ten, the Princeton Tigers will look to finish the 2016 regular season on a high note with three road battles this weekend before heading into the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Tournament.
The Tigers are 15-7 overall and are first in the NWPC with a 6-1 mark. No. 10 Harvard, one of Saturday's (8:30 p.m.) opponents, and No. 12 Brown, Sunday's (2:30 p.m.) foe are tied for second at 5-2. No. 20 Saint Francis-Brooklyn is third (4-3), followed by Iona (1-6) and MIT (0-7), the Tigers' first opponent on Saturday (10:30 a.m.).
In the summer, the CWPA broke off into two separate conferences. Princeton is a part of the NWPC with the CWPA still serving as the governing body. For more information on the conference split, read the CWPA's release here.
Earlier this season, Princeton dropped MIT, 13-7 at DeNunzio Pool. In the contest, sophomore Matt Payne broke a 14-year program record with eight assists. After MIT tied the contest at 3-all with 2:56 left in the second stanza, the Tigers went on 5-1 run to take an 8-4 advantage at the half. Princeton scored the first two goals of the second half and never let MIT back in the contest.
Head coach Luis Nicolao's squad's only conference loss was to Harvard on Oct. 2nd. The Crimson scored twice in the final three minutes to take an 8-7 decision over the Tigers. Junior Jordan Colina' five points led the offense while freshman Sean Duncan registered two tallies and drew five ejections.
Last month, the Tigers took down Brown, 11-7 at DeNunzio Pool (Oct. 1). A three-goal spurt during a 44-second span of the third quarter stretched the Tigers' lead to five and put the game away.
Payne's remarkable season puts him with a team-high 93 points. His 45 assists are tied for the second highest for a single season in program history while two more tallies give him 50 for the year. Duncan is looking for a 50-50 rookie campaign as he sits 45 goals and 53 drawn ejections.
Four more Tigers have registered at least 20 goals including sophomore Ryan Wilson, who is the only player on the team with at least 20 goals, 20 assists, 20 steals and 20 drawn ejections. Junior Vojislav Mitrovic was this week's NWPC Defensive Player of the Week and has secured at least 10 saves in 15 of his 18 starts.
