PRINCETON, N.J. (11/30/16) - Coming off of a two-game sweep of No. 10 Bemidji, the Princeton men's hockey returns to Hobey Baker Rink this weekend to host No. 18 Union and Rensselaer on Dec. 2 & 3. Game times are both at 7 p.m. Friday's game, in addition to being streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network, will be shown on Facebook Live.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton returns to Hobey Baker Rink after a sweep of No. 10 Bemidji on the road last weekend. The wins marked Princeton's first of the year as they are now 2-6-1 overall. Princeton was just the second opponent to be able to beat Bemidji - following North Dakota, as they Tigers scored seven times on the Beavers which had the best scoring defense in the country. Juniors Eric Robinson and David Hallisey lead the team in scoring with eight points apiece. Robinson has scored five times with three assists while Hallisey has five assists to go along with three goals. Sophomores Alex Riche, Ryan Kuffner and freshman Jeremy Germain have six points apiece. Senior Colton Phinney is 1-6-1 with an .897 save percentage and a 3.38 goals against average. Backup junior Ben Halford started in net during the last game, his first appearance this season, and earned the win with 43 saves.
SCOUTING THE DUTCHMEN
With an 8-3-2 overall record, Union heads into the weekend ranked No. 18 in the latest USCHO poll and is receiving votes in the USA Today poll. With a 4-1-1 ECAC record, the Dutchmen are tied for third in the league standings. The team has been off for three weeks and has not played a game since Nov. 12. Union averages 3.69 goals per game and is allowing 3.08. The power play ranks 43rd nationally at 14.4 percent (13/90) while the penalty kill is 34th at 82.5 percent (47/57). The squad has three players in the national top 15 in scoring led by senior Mike Vecchione who leads all skaters in the NCAA with 26 points on 14 goals and 12 assists. Junior Spencer Foo has 21 points on six goals and 15 assists, while sophomore Sebastian Vedmar has 18 points. Senior Jeff Taylor (PIT) leads the blueliners with 12 points. Senior Alex Sakellaropoulos has started in nine of the team's 13 games. He has a 7-1-1 record with a .906 save percentage and a 2.64 GAA. Sophomore Jake Kupsky (SJS) is 1-2-1 with an .875 save percentage and a 3.72 GAA.
THE PRINCETON/UNION SERIES
Union has a slight lead in the all-time series, 29-22-7 since the teams first met in 1982. The Tigers are looking to turn the tables on the scores in most recent years with the Dutchmen riding a 14-game unbeaten streak at 11-0-3. Princeton's last win in the series was March 15, 2009, a 3-1 win at Hobey Baker Rink as Princeton won the ECAC quarterfinal series two games to one. Ryan Kuffner, Quin Pompi and Ryan Siiro each have two points against the Dutchmen. Colton Phinney has a .910 save percentage and a 3.27 GAA. Halford played once against Union and allowed six on 37 shots.
SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
Rensselaer is 3-12-1 overall and recently snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 2-0 shutout of Arizona State. It came one day after the Engineers lost a 5-3 game to the second-year program on the road. In the ECAC, RPI is 1-5 with its lone win a 3-1 game versus Brown. The team averages 2.00 goals per game and allows 3.50 gpg. The penalty kill ranks seventh nationally at 89.3 percent (75/84), while the power-play percentage is 14.5 (12/83). Sophomore Evan Tironese leads the team in the scoring column with 17 points with 14 coming by way of assist, in addition to three goals. Senior Riley Bourbonnais and junior defender Jared Wilson have a team-high seven goals apiece. Bourbonnais adds six assists, while Wilson has two. Jacob Hayhurst leads the rookies in scoring with two goals and six assists. Sophomore Chase Perry (DET) has played in 11 of 16 games and has an .899 save percentage and a 3.67 GAA. Backup, sophomore Cam Hackett has a .913 save percentage and a 2.71 GAA in six games.
THE PRINCETON/RPI SERIES
Rensselaer has a 67-33-11 lead in the all-time series with Princeton since the teams first met in 1952. The Engineers are 3-0-1 in the last four games with the Tigers' last win a 2-1 game on Jan. 10, 2014 at Hobey Baker Rink. Ben Foster and Max Veronneau both have three points against the Engineers, while Colton Phinney has a .914 save percentage and a 2.97 GAA in six games.
