Tiger Fencers Post Strong Showing at December NAC

Current and former Tiger fencers competed at the December NAC event in Richmond, Va., on the first weekend of the month, with senior Anna Van Brummen and sophomore Sage Palmedo taking the top finishes.
Van Brummen tied for third of 130 competitors in the Division I women's épée competition, two spots in front of classmate Katharine Holmes with rookie Kasia Nixon finishing 24th. Van Brummen went 5-1 in pool bouts and won her first four direct elimination contests before falling 15-9 to eventual champion, 2008 NCAA champ and 2012 Olympic team bronze medalist Kelley Hurley in the semis. Holmes went 6-0 in the pool round and advanced to the direct elimination quarterfinals.
Palmedo tied for third of 84 Division I women's saber fencers, sweeping her six pool bouts and winning four times in the direct elimination round before a loss in the semifinals. Rookie Maia Chamberlain took 16th and Eliza Stone '13 placed 35th.
Sophomore Wesley Johnson led the men with a seventh-place finish of 244 fencers in the Division I men's épée competition, while senior Alex House took 20th and freshman Wesley Yuan placed 42nd.
Tiger assistant coach Oleg Stetsiv placed fifth of 25 fencers in the Veteran 50+ men's saber competition, and Jim Adams '61 took top-10 finishes in all three weapons at the Veteran 70+ level with a high of sixth of 15 in the saber event.
