Third Period Propels No. 20 Clarkson Past Princeton 5-2 in Men's Hockey
February 12, 2016 | Men's Ice Hockey
POTSDAM, N.Y. (2/12/16) - A three-goal third period by No. 20 Clarkson led the Golden Knights to a 5-2 win over Princeton in men's hockey on Friday night.
The teams traded goals in the first and second periods before Ben Dalpe gave Clarkson the lead for good at 5:19 of the third. Paul Geiger added to the lead at 10:57 before Jordan Boucher tallied his second of the night at 13:04.
Princeton was perfect on special teams, going 1 for 1 on the power play and 2 for 2 on the penalty kill.
Freshman Ryan Kuffner gave Princeton a 1-0 lead converting on the team's first and only power-play of the game at 7:17 of the first. Senior Mike Ambrosia and Josh Teves assisted. Teves stripped the puck from a Golden Knight and centered it to Ambrosia. Splitting the defenders, Ambrosia sent a cross-ice pass to Kuffner for the one-timer.
Dylan Gareau tied it up after Jeff DiNallo fired a shot on net. Colton Phinney made the stop but couldn't collect the puck as Todd Christian poked it free and got to Gareau for the goal.
Boucher's first goal gave Clarkson the lead at 11:16 of the second when he buried a Nic Pierog pass that caroomed all the way around the boards to Boucher inside the left face-off circle.
Freshman Max Veronneau's ninth goal of the season came off a Teves rebound that banked in the goal off of netminder Greg Lewis' skate at 17:04. Kuffner also received credit on the goal.
After Boucher gave Clarkson the 5-2 lead at 13:04, Ben Halford relieved Phinney of his duties. With 3:33 remaining Princeton put an extra skater on the ice but Lewis stopped both shots he faced before Halford returned to the goal for the final 38 seconds.
Halford did not have to make a save in his 4:01 on the ice, while Phinney stopped 25 shots.
Lewis made 26 saves as Clarkson extends its unbeaten streak to eight games and is now 16-10-3 overall and 8-6-3 in the ECAC.
Princeton takes on St. Lawrence tomorrow night, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. The Saints defeated No. 1 Quinnipiac 4-3 in overtime across town in Canton this evening.
