Men's Tennis Draws Memphis in San Diego Opener Thursday
March 15, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Princeton's 36th-ranked men's tennis team will open the USD/SDSU Hilton Mission Valley Spring Classic Thursday against No. 26 Memphis, and the challenging field will continue on through the weekend.
After the match with Memphis, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET Thursday at San Diego State, Princeton will face either No. 8 Texas Tech or No. 75 San Diego State Friday, and then one of No. 28 Tulane, No. 34 San Diego, No. 46 Denver or No. 49 Harvard Saturday. The matches will take place either at San Diego State or the University of San Diego.
Times and sites (SDSU or USD) for Friday and Saturday matches will be announced after each round.
This will be the third straight year Princeton has competed in the event. In 2014, the Tigers took their middle match of the weekend, against San Diego State, around defeats to Drake and Purdue. Last year, Princeton did one better, winning the opener against Indiana before a loss to San Diego and a win over then-No. 22 Harvard, which still stands as the highest-ranked opponent Princeton has defeated out of the 24 ITA-ranked foes Princeton has toppled in three-plus seasons under Billy Pate.
Princeton has won its last three matches against ITA-ranked opponents entering the weekend and has won three of four overall. The San Diego matches will be Princeton's first since a homestand two weekends ago that saw Princeton beat No. 58 Indiana and No. 24 Penn State by 6-1 scores.
After the event wraps up, Princeton will have the following weekend away from competition before Ivy League play begins April 2-3 with home matches against Brown and Yale.
