Early Deficit Too Much for No. 7 Princeton to Overcome at No. 6 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (3/16/16) - No. 7 Princeton couldn't recover from a six-goal deficit at No. 8 Penn State, as the Nittany Lions earned a 14-10 win in a battle of two top-10 women's lacrosse teams this afternoon.
This is the third top-10 ranked team the Tigers have faced this season, and second straight, after a 16-11 loss at No. 6 Notre Dame this past Sunday - which marked the first loss of the season.
Penn State controlled from the first draw and went on a 6-0 run in the first 18 minutes of the game with Jenna Mosketti tallying a natural hat trick.
Princeton called two timeouts during this period and got things back on track at 9:35 with its first goal of the game. Senior Stephanie Paloscio ended the drought with an unassisted goal and then set up sophomore Abby Finkelston three minuts later to make it a four-goal game.
The Nittany Lions pushed their lead back to six as Stephanie Lazo set up Madison Cyr for two final first-half tallies, 8-2. Lazo assisting on five of Cyr's six goals today.
The Tigers began the second half on a 3-0 run with sophomore Ellie McNulty scoring twice in 50 seconds followed by senior Anya Gersoff's first goal of the game. Cyr ended the run but Gersoff picked things back up with her second goal at 22:45 to make it a 9-6 game.
Madison Carter pushed her team into double digits with back-to-back goals in a span of 2:11 at the midway points of the half.
Finkelston tallied her second goal with help from sophomore Alexandra Bruno with Princeton pushing it to 11-7.
Cyr added two more goals and Katie O'Donnell converted a free-position attempt as Penn State grabbed its largest laead of the game, 14-7.
The Tigers weren't going away as they scored three goals in the final 5:08. Finkelston capped off a hat trick with help from junior Olivia Hompe, and freshman Allie Rogers and Hompe both converted on free-position attempts. Rogers' goal was her first career goal.
The Penn State defense did its job on Hompe, who entered today's game averaging 5.2 points per game, and had had at least three goals in every game this season.
Emi Smith made seven saves in net for Penn State, which improves to 7-1 on the season.
Junior Ellie DeGarmo stopped six shots as Princeton drops its second straight game and is now 4-2 overall.
Penn State outshot Princeton 30-23, thanks to a 17-7 shot differential in the first. The Tigers won five more ground balls, 17-12 while each team claimed 13 draw controls. Turnovers were troublesome to the Tigers and led the the Nittany Lions grabbing that 6-0 lead. At the end of the game Princeton had 23, while Penn State had 16.
The Tigers return to action a week from Saturday, March 26 when they travel to Harvard in an Ivy League battle.
