PRINCETON, N.J. (3/5/16) - The No. 9 Princeton women's lacrosse team got goals from eight different players and played a stifling defense against Dartmouth in the Ivy League opener, 11-5.
Senior Stephanie Paloscio paced the offense with two goals and two assists, while junior Olivia Hompe had a hat trick. Hompe has had at least three goals in every game this season. Sophomores Ellie McNulty and Colby Chanenchuk each had a goal and an assist apiece. Junior Ellie DeGarmo made 12 stops, just one shy of her career best.
The Tigers defense held Dartmouth's leading scorer Jaclyn Leto, who entered today's game averaging five goals per game without a single point.
"We were super excited and knew they had one of the top scorers in th country and scouted them really hard," DeGarmo said. "I'm so proud of the defense, I couldn't have asked for a better game. We're more confident this year. It's same line D and I thought we did a really good job last year, but we have a whole year under our belts of playing with each other and we know each other so well. The experience has helped a lot."
DeGarmo set the tone right away with a save on the first Big Green possession. Dartmouth would have to get its first two scores off of free-position attempts. On three other attempts, DeGarmo came up with saves.
Princeton took a 3-0 lead with goals from Hompe, Camille Sullivan and Chanenchuk. Kathryn Giroux, who took the most overall shots for Dartmouth with seven, converted an eight meter to put her team on the board at 10:31. Senior Anya Gersoff buried Paloscio's second assist with five minutes to play in the first as the Tigers took a 4-1 lead into the locker room.
Dartmouth looked to have regrouped at halftime and went on a 2-1 run to start the second. Elizabeth Mastrio converted a free-position, followed by a Palscio goal and then a Taryn Deck tally at 17:30.
The Big Green would only come within just two though as Princeton called a timeout after the 5-3 score at 17:30 and went on a four-goal run to put the game out of reach, 9-3.
The teams traded two goals apiece in those final nine minutes as Princeton improves to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Ivy League.
DeGarmo has had two 13-save performances this year in addition to her 12 today.
"I'm seeing the ball better, I'm a little more patient," DeGarmo explains between last year and this year. "Experience and knwoing what it's like to be in a game. Last year it was so new to me, being at the college level. I definitely gained a lot of confidence from last year and that continues to be one of my focuses."
Dartmouth's Charlotte Wahle made six saves in net as the Big Green fall to 3-2 on the season.
Princeton will have another chance at a top-5 team next weekend when travels to No. 5 Notre Dame for the first time in program history. Game day is Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m., and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
