BOX SCORE
Olivia Hompe had four goals to share game-high honors with Notre Dame's Rachel Sexton, but the Irish's top-ranked scoring offense performed again as No. 6 Notre Dame defended home turf against No. 7 Princeton Sunday, 16-11.
Hompe's first goal came less than four minutes into the game, but Notre Dame scored five of the next six goals, the first three of which were by Sexton, to make it 5-2 for the Irish just past the midway mark of the first half.
Princeton then tried to turn the tide with three of the game's next four goals, with one apiece from Abby Finkelston, Colby Chanenchuk and Ellie McNulty, to make it 6-5 with seven minutes before halftime.
But the Irish, who came into the day averaging a national-best 16.63 goals per game, scored twice in the final two minutes of the opening half to regain momentum and used that to start a 6-0 run to take a 12-5 lead before 11 minutes were gone in the second half. The Irish's lead grew to eight at 14-6 with less than 12 minutes to go in the game before Princeton capped it there and scored five of the game's last seven goals to make the 16-11 final.
The Tigers, who suffered their first loss of the season with the defeat, will travel to Penn State in the second of five straight games away from the Class of 1952 Stadium, Wednesday at 3 p.m.
