NCAA Fencing Regional Set for Saturday at Moravian College
March 09, 2016 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Three-fifths of a fencer's bid to the NCAA Championships depends on what happens on NCAA Regional weekend, and that day will come Saturday for Princeton and the rest of the Mid-Atlantic and South region, hosted by Lafayette but held at Moravian College's Timothy Breidegam Fieldhouse in Bethlehem, Pa.
Though the event was originally scheduled to be held at Lafayette, the school announced Wednesday that due to illness on campus, the event had to be held elsewhere.
Fencing will get underway at 9 a.m. for all weapons except men's saber (10 a.m.) and women's saber (11 a.m.) with competitors from Drew, Duke, FDU (women only), Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Lafayette, NJIT, North Carolina, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Stevens Tech and Temple (women only) constituting the Mid-Atlantic/South region.
Princeton returns both of its regional champions from a year ago, épée Isabel Ford and foil Thomas Dudey. Saber Gracie Stone and épée Jack Hudson were regional champions two years ago.
While 60 percent of the selection to the NCAA Championships depends on the outcome of the NCAA Regionals, 40 percent is already in the books, having been determined by regular-season fencing. The Mid-Atlantic/South region will get eight bids in men's épée and men's saber, seven in men's foil, women's saber and women's épée, and six in women's foil. Two at-large spots will be allocated across the four regions for each weapon to bring the total competitors at the NCAA Championships to 24 for each of the six weapons.
Princeton had 11 of the maximum 12 selections a year ago after a five-year streak of qualifying the full 12 to the NCAA finals at two per weapon. Selections will be announced Tuesday, March 15. The NCAA Championships will run March 24-27 at Brandeis in Waltham, Mass., with the women fencing on the first two days and the men the second two.
Results for the regional will be updated here.
