Women's Lightweights Claim Two Medals At Knecht Cup Regatta
April 10, 2016 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
After competing in primarily eights the first two weeks of the season, the fifth-ranked Princeton women's lightweights sent out five boats into various 4+ competitions this weekend at the Knecht Cup. The Tigers left Mercer Lake with a pair of medals, but also a different form of competition that head coach Paul Rassam believes will benefit his squad in the future.
“The plan for this weekend was to do something different, to focus on small boat racing and the power and technical elements that small boat racing demands,” Rassam said. “The athletes performed really well and enjoyed themselves. All five fours battled hard, sometimes in very challenging conditions.”
Rassam sent one of his boats into the open fours competition, and that boat handled the challenge in remarkable style. Boston College edged North Carolina for the gold, but Princeton defeated open women's boats from Drexel, Alabama and Kansas to take gold in 7:33.39.
The Princeton 4A also earned bronze in the lightweight four event in a time of 7:46.38. Stanford took the win in 7:31.83, but Villanova, Princeton and MIT were locked in a three-team battle for the next two medals. Villanova edged the Tigers by less than one second for silver, but the Tigers fought off MIT by more than three seconds for bronze.
The novice four was tops in its class in the petite final, as it won in a time of 8:01.82, about one full second ahead of Bowdoin. Two other Princeton fours competed in the lightweight four event, but they finished 7th and 8th to just miss out on the final.
Princeton will be off next weekend, and it will return home the following weekend to take on Georgetown for the Class of 2006 Cup.
