Harvard Defeats Men's Tennis, 4-3
April 10, 2016 | Men's Tennis
The top four singles matches all went to third sets, and Harvard won the last one on court to defeat the Princeton men's tennis team 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Harvard.
The loss deals a blow to Princeton's Ivy title hopes, as the Tigers fell two losses back of unbeaten Columbia and a match behind Dartmouth, which one a battle of one-loss teams Sunday over Penn.
The Tigers got off to an auspicious start, with Alex Day and Luke Gamble defeating Harvard's nationally 44th-ranked pair of Nicky Hu and Brian Yeung on court one to clinch the doubles point.
Harvard then won three of the first four singles matches to end, taking a 3-2 lead before Princeton got a win from Josh Yablon on court four to square it at 3-3.
The match came down to a third set on court two between Tom Colautti and Sebastian Beltrame for Harvard, and Beltrame won that third set 6-4 to clinch the win for the Crimson.
Princeton will head to Columbia for a 2 p.m. match Friday before playing at home next Sunday against Cornell.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "Tough one to lose. The guys fought their tails off. Each time we compete against Harvard, it seemd sto be a great quality of tennis and incredibly close matches that can go either way. That was certainly the case today. We put together a solid performance in doubles to gain some momentum and we had some great efforts in singles. We have been very strong at the 5/6 positions this year, but Harvard played very well in those spots today. We'll regroup and prepare for another tough road match Friday at Columbia." |
