Big Weekend Ahead for Women's Tennis Against Columbia, Cornell
April 12, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Columbia enters the final full weekend of Ivy League play atop the standings, but Princeton is still in control of its chances to win an Ivy League title.
If the Tigers sweep the weekend, which will bring Columbia to the Lenz Tennis Center Friday at 2 p.m. and send Princeton to Cornell for a 10 a.m. match Sunday, Princeton will gain at least a share of the Ivy title.
Friday's match will also serve to recognize Princeton's two seniors, Amanda Muliawan and Emily Hahn.
The Lions enter the weekend at 4-1 ahead of four teams with two losses, including Princeton, Penn, Cornell and Yale. While half the league will wrap its Ivy schedule this weekend, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth and Harvard will continue into next weekend, with Yale playing Brown and Dartmouth against Harvard.
All eight Ivy League teams are ranked in this week's ITA top 75, and Columbia is the highest at No. 34.
Though Princeton won the 2014 Ivy match against the Lions on the way to a perfect Ivy season, Columbia broke Princeton's 12-match Ivy win streak last year in Manhattan. That said, when the Lions have to come to Princeton, the Tigers have never lost, going a perfect 15-0 against Columbia at home all-time.
If the Tigers can upset the Lions, Princeton will have the chance to continue a lengthy winning streak against Cornell, but one that hasn't come easily. Princeton has won 22 matches in a row against Cornell, with the Big Red's last win coming in the 1997 ECAC tournament. Though Princeton beat Cornell 4-1 in an ECAC consolation match in February at Dartmouth, the Tigers had to gut out a 4-3 win last year at the Lenz Tennis Center to secure their second straight Ivy League title and NCAA tournament bid.
